From Mine to Masterpiece: the Journey of a Diamond

A diamond is more than just a gemstone, it is a timeless symbol of beauty, strength, and eternity. But before a diamond sparkles in a piece of jewellery, it has undergone a fascinating journey that takes between one and three billion years.

The origin, a wonder of nature

This exquisite gemstone is formed under extreme conditions. Deep within the Earth, at depths of 140 to 200 kilometres, where temperatures range between 1,300 and 2,000 degrees Celsius, immense pressure prevails. When pure carbon crystallises under these conditions, the fundamental structure of a diamond takes shape.

Pure carbon forms a colourless, white diamond. It is only when other elements or influences come into play that the gemstone acquires its unique hue. For example, nitrogen absorbs blue light, giving the diamond a yellow tint, while exposure to natural radiation can turn the outer layer of a diamond green.

The journey to the surface

Retrieving diamonds directly from these depths is impossible. Volcanic eruptions play a crucial role in bringing them to the surface. These eruptions create kimberlite pipes, acting as natural elevators that transport the diamonds within solidified rock. Millions of years later, these deposits are uncovered and mined.

The art of cutting

This is where the master diamond cutter comes in. A rough diamond bears little resemblance to the dazzling gemstone we recognise. With exceptional precision, the stone is cut and polished to maximise its brilliance. The famous ‘brilliant cut’, with its 57 facets, is designed to reflect light optimally, bringing the diamond to life.

As the hardest natural material on Earth, a diamond can only be cut with another diamond. This process involves using diamond dust or powder as an abrasive to create facets and achieve a flawless polish.

From workshop to jewellery

Once cut, the diamond is selected for a piece of jewellery. Whether set in a ring, an elegant necklace, or a pair of dazzling earrings, the design and setting are crucial in enhancing the stone’s natural beauty. Skilled artisans and jewellers meticulously craft each piece to create a timeless masterpiece.

A timeless symbol

Whether as an engagement ring, a cherished heirloom, or a luxurious statement piece, a diamond always tells a story. It symbolises love, strength, and exclusivity and is often passed down through generations. The journey of a diamond is a journey of transformation, from pure natural force to ultimate elegance.
