STORIES - Interview Eva de Mol International Women's Day
For International Women’s Day, we spotlight Eva de Mol, co-founder of CapitalT and a scientist. With a PhD from VU University and Berkeley, she has spent over a decade researching how team composition impacts startup success. As an investor, Eva has backed over 20 startups in climate, education, and the future of work. She is committed to closing the funding gap for female entrepreneurs and driving diversity in leadership. In this interview, she shares her insights on women empowerment, leadership, and innovation.
What does female leadership mean to you, and how do you incorporate it into your work and life?
For me, female leadership is not about being a woman. What truly needs to change is the bias against women in leadership roles. Women don’t lead less effectively—often, they lead better and with more diversity. Yet, they are held to higher expectations than men in leadership positions. For instance, they are expected to maintain the perfect work-life balance while also taking the kids to school every day, alongside their careers.
I’ve let go of that pursuit of balance. I’m proud to show my children an entrepreneurial example and accept that sometimes life is just busy. And at other times, it’s quieter—and I make sure to enjoy those moments even more. It’s about making your own choices, standing by them, and setting the right expectations with your partner.
How does your personal style reflect who you are as a powerful woman?
The most important thing: wear what makes you feel good. Early in my career, I tried to conform to the expected dress code—especially as a woman. Until I realized how pointless that was. True confidence comes from wearing what makes you feel great. My button-down blouses made way for leather jackets and bombers—and yes, I even wore a tutu once and got compliments for it! Confidence shines through when you feel comfortable in what you wear.
Jewelry can make a powerful statement. Which piece do you love to wear the most, and why?
When it comes to jewellery, I’m definitely a "less is more" type. One statement piece is enough—a beautiful watch or a glamorous standout earring. That’s already a statement in itself.
What does International Women’s Day mean to you personally?
For me, it means getting back to work to further close the funding gap. Still today, only 2% of all investment capital worldwide goes to women or female-led startups—insane! And the irony? Female-led or more diverse startup teams often outperform the rest. You can’t solve every problem in the world, but this is definitely one I’m committed to changing!
